You know the move. It's 3am, and one leg slides out from under the doona into the cool air while the rest of you stays tucked in. If you do this, you're not weird. You're running one of the oldest temperature tricks your body owns - you're thermoregulating.

You have to cool down to fall asleep

Sleep starts with your thermostat. In the hour before sleep, your core body temperature begins to drop, and your brain uses that fall as a signal that it's time to power down. To lower your core temperature, your body has to move heat from the inside out and release it into the air.

Your feet are heat-release valves

Here's the part most people never learn: your hands and feet are some of the most efficient radiators on your body.

The skin on your palms and soles is hairless and packed with special blood vessels (arteriovenous anastomoses) that act as direct shortcuts between arteries and veins. When your body wants to dump heat, it floods your feet with warm blood. Their high blood-vessel density and high surface-area-to-volume ratio make them shed heat fast, like the fins on a radiator. Sleep scientists even track the temperature gap between your warm feet and cooler core as one of the strongest predictors of how quickly you'll fall asleep.

So where does the leg-out come in?

When the little climate under your covers gets too warm, your body is still trying to release heat through your feet, but there's nowhere for it to go. So it improvises: it sticks a leg out into the cooler air, giving your most efficient radiator somewhere to dump heat again. Relief. Back to sleep.

It's smart. It's also a blunt instrument. You end up half-too-warm, half-cold-draft, and you only do it after you've overheated enough to half-wake, the kind of micro-disruption that chips away at deep sleep. The real problem is a sleep surface that traps heat and moisture against your skin. The leg is just paying for the bedding's mistake.
