Australian Mattress Sizes in CM 2026 | Sheet Fit Guide

Choosing the right mattress size is the easy part. Getting sheets, pillows, and doonas that fit it snugly is where most people get stuck, especially in Australia, where "Queen" and "King" don't always mean what they mean in the US or UK. Here's every Australian mattress size in centimetres, the sheet size that matches it, and the fit questions we get asked most.

A note on "152 x 203": you'll sometimes see Queen listed as 152 x 203cm and other times as 153 x 203cm. Both are correct; it comes down to manufacturer tolerance, and a 1cm variance is completely normal. Either figure gets you the right sheets.

AU vs US and UK naming, quickly
- "King Single" is an Australian and NZ term. There's no exact US or UK equivalent; the closest is a narrow US Twin XL, but it's not identical.
- "California King" doesn't exist in Australia. It's longer and narrower than our King (183 x 213cm vs 183 x 203cm), so a Cali King fitted sheet won't sit snug at the foot of an Australian King.
- "Double" and "Full" are the same size, different name. Australia and the UK say Double; the US and Canada say Full. All land around 137-138 x 188-189cm.
If in doubt: measure your mattress in cm and match it to the table above rather than trusting the name on the label. Shopping an overseas retailer? Check the cm dimensions, not the size name.
Choosing sheets for your size (and your temperature)
Getting the size right is step one. Step two, the one most people skip, is choosing a fabric that suits how you sleep once the sheet's on the bed. Hot sleepers run warm year-round, whatever the season, so a sheet that traps heat will do it in July as readily as in January. If you're buying now, ahead of spring and summer, it's worth choosing a fabric built to manage heat before the warmer months make it obvious.
What to look for beyond size:
- Thermal properties, not just thread count. Thread count tells you about density and feel, not how a fabric handles body heat. The number that matters for cooling is Qmax, a lab-tested measure (JIS standard) of how quickly a fabric draws heat away from your skin. Higher Qmax means cooler to the touch.

- Fit at depth. Whatever fabric you choose, match the pocket depth to your mattress (see the table above) so the sheet stays put instead of pinging off the corners at 3am.

Common fit questions
What size is a Double bed in Australia in cm?
An Australian Double mattress is 138 x 188cm. It's the same size as a "Full" in the US and Canada.
Is a Queen bed 152 x 203cm?
Yes. You may also see 153 x 203cm; both are correct, with the 1cm difference down to manufacturer tolerance.
Will Queen sheets fit a Double mattress?
Not snugly. Queen sheets are wider and longer, so they'll fit but with excess fabric to tuck away. Match sheets to your actual mattress size for a proper fit.
What's the difference between a King Single and a Single?
A Single is 92 x 188cm; a King Single is wider and longer at 107 x 203cm. King Single is an Australian and NZ size with no direct US or UK equivalent.
Do Australian and US mattress sizes match?
Mostly, yes. For Single/Twin, Double/Full, Queen, and King the cm dimensions are within a centimetre or two. The exception is California King, which has no Australian equivalent.
